“We tend to overestimate what we can complete in a single day, and underestimate what we can complete over longer periods of time.” – Chris Guillebeau
WTF?! Really, 8 million people? Jacob, what type of drug were you on when you wrote that — and more importantly, where can i get some? Yeah. That’s right. I said it. I was sober. And I’m standing by it.
Frankly put, I’m fuckin’ shocked. So I’m cursing, it’s one of those days. Well what am I so shocked about? Oh stop fronting — you already know. It’s the massive 15,000 pound pink elephant that’s sitting right in the middle of Sensophy’s living room. And you haven’t even said anything about it! How politically correct of you.
Last month I announced that i was looking to inspire 8,000,000 people. Since then, Sensophy had over 6,000 different peeps swing through and kick it with us. This is what blows me away — not three, not even two, but ONE person has said something along the lines of “Jacob, how do you expect to inspire 8 million people?” One freaking person yo! (Shout out to Tripp from The New Man)
So it’s time we had that talk. The one that your parents warned you about. The one about the birds and the bees and this ridiculously radical claim.
Why Look To Inspire Millions?
What’s the psychological makeup of this madman’s mind?
The type of dude who deliberately sets out to inspire 8 million people. Simply said, this is just one of my goals toward living an extraordinary life. It involves being all I can be.
In the last two years, I’ve obnoxiously allowed myself to set intentions that I had no idea how I’d attain. Kinda like going to a Jets game with good ol’ Gary Vaynerchuck. If you watch the first video of that challenge, I had NO IDEA “HOW” and if I would accomplish it.
I’ve found that the “why” is the most important piece of the puzzle. The “what” and “how” will fit in after the “why” is in place.
Self-Help Saved My Life
About a month ago, I was playing with what my next “unrealistic goal” would be.
How bad ass of this brother. Like tough leather jacket and timbo boots bad ass. I knew it had to be something with a heart and I wanted it to be massive.
Looking back about five years, I remember when I was 21 and first found out that self-help existed. Up until then, I’d been going through peaks and valleys, highs and lows, for most of my life. I came across some stuff by Brian Tracy that pretty much identified the blueprint toward a certain type of success.
I can distinctly remember being in my bedroom of mom’s house, having an epiphanal moment. It was kinda like I had just been saved. I was so grateful that this dude was sharing steps toward success and, soon after, I found that there was a self-help community of people doing the same. There was something so reassuring about listening to people who already accomplished things I was interested in. I felt like, with their guidance, success was my destiny.
That feeling of inspiration, hope, empowerment, guidance, success… agrhhhh!! It makes me wanna roar — easy tiger. Anyway, as true with a lot of people, I’ve seen some pretty dark places within myself. For a long time I felt like i was trapped, even cursed, and I had this belief that I was gonna be like that forever. I thought it was beyond my control.
The journey that I’ve had in the last five years has led me to know it’s possible to get out of that dark place. Making 8 million dollars would barely scratch the bottom of how rewarding it would be to inspire 8 million people.
“The person who says something is impossible should not interrupt the person who is doing it” – Chinese Proverb
Why 8 Million?
Well, why not?
I was going to settle for a million but it seemed too easy. Haha, no joke. Since I was setting this “unrealistic” intention, why not make it massive? In order to truly embody the philosophy, I’m going all in!! Since there are 8 million people in NYC, I figured that number was a good place to play. They say “go big or go home.” I’m going both.
How Am I Gonna Do It?
Truth be told, I don’t know.
I don’t even know how I would measure the inspiration meter of 8 million people. Surely there has to be some sort of chain effect that just can’t be set into statistics.
I think a decent place to start may be by counting the visitors on Sensophy. Most people who come to the site spend a couple of minutes on it, and if they’re here for a couple of minutes, I’m thinking that they’re at least a little inspired. I mean, as flattering as it may be, I don’t think you’re here just to look at my baby blue eyes. Or are you?
So say we decide that 8,000,000 visitors is the number to hit. I could track those stats using analytical tools on Sensophy. Granted it wouldn’t be 100 percent accurate, but it would be a start. Still, that leaves us puffin’ on that dream pipe. People. 8 million of them. How?
The Penny Principle
Do you know what happens when you take a penny and double its value everyday for a month? This:
- Day 1: $0.01
- Day 2: $0.02
- Day 3: $0.04
- Day 4: $0.08
- Day 5: $0.16
- Day 6: $0.32
- Day 7: $0.64
- Day 8: $1.28
- Day 9: $2.56
- Day 10: $5.12
- Day 11: $10.24
- Day 12: $20.48
- Day 13: $40.96
- Day 14: $81.92
- Day 15: $163.84
- Day 16: $327.68
- Day 17: 655.36
- Day 18: $1,310.72
- Day 19: $2,621.44
- Day 20: $5,242.88
- Day 21: $10,485.76
- Day 22: $20,971.52
- Day 23: $41,943.04
- Day 24: $83,886.08
- Day 25: $167,772.16
- Day 26: $335,544.32
- Day 27: $671,088.64
- Day 28: $1,342,177.28
- Day 29: $2,684,354.56
- Day 30: $5,368,709.12
- Day 31: $10,737,418.24
Reverse Engineering
It’s bugged out to see how these big boy numbers sprouted from consistently nurturing seeds that were so small. Next, I started to play with reverse engineering this concept. Let’s say I wanna inspire 8,000,000 people in the next 5 years. What would happen if we cut that number in 1/2 every 6 months. Here flows:
- 5 years: 8,000,000 people
- 4.5 years: 4,000,000 people
- 4 years: 2,000,000 people
- 3.5 years: 1,000,000 people
- 3 years: 500,000 people
- 2.5 years: 250,000 people
- 2 years: 125,000 people
- 1.5 years: 62,500 people
- 1 year: 31,250 people
- 6 months: 15,625 people
I was stoked to see how this unfolded. It really tickled my tonsils. We just took the “unrealistic” concept of 8,000,000 people and, in a practical manner, broke it down to 15,625 people! I then went to launch Google Analytics to see how many visitors we’ve had in the last 6 months. Low and behold, my brain could barely believe my eyes…

Easy Way: Dedicate Your Life To It!
So maybe it happens in 5 years, but maybe it doesn’t.
Here’s where the real deal spiel comes crashing through this article. Why would I ever think that I couldn’t inspire 8 million people?
If I decide to dedicate my life to doing so – what’s stopping me? I mean, I’m saying, my entire life, my purpose for existing. It could take 20 years to do so, but I know it can be done. So then the next question that comes is… is this something that’s worth dedicating my life to? Well, it just may be.
Now I Ask You…
- What’s one great thing you would dare to dream if you knew you could not fail?
- If you decided to dedicate the rest of your life to doing it, do you think you’d be able to?
Granted you may have a career, financial responsibilities, debts, family obligations, etc, but those things don’t last forever. I’m speaking about your entire existence. Have you found something that excites you so much that you wanna completely dedicate yourself to it? If not, answer the above. If so, what’s stopping you?!
Allow me to direct you toward the “Sensophy slogan”:
The only thing stopping you is your story about why you can’t!!!

Jacob..this is truly great stuff. I have recently come to the conclusion that nothing is unrealistic.
You’re aiming at less than 1% of the world’s population. And with the internet at your hands you can reach anyone on any continent.
Love your slogan too. Of course this assumes you are already drowning out other people’s stories of why you can’t. 🙂
Haha… Thanx dude!! Really appreciate your mindset and where you're at. What "unrealisticness" are you up to these days?
Creating my own reality!!!
Just spent all day transferring domains because I realized that reality-creation is truly my goal…not just the $$$
That and planning to quit my job, drop everything, and move to NYC –> not that unrealstic…just insane.
Awesome dude! Make sure to drop me a line when you get here. -=)
And that reminds me…gotta update the gravatar! Hah
Nice job — 8 million sounds like a good start. 🙂
Hahaha… Thanx yo!
🙂 Woop… I know you'll do it 😉 I got ur back xxx
Haha.. Thanx homegirl. Virtual shug!!
I have been told my whole life to not excect too much..i have spent almost the same amount of time, proving that wrong.
Believing anything is possible and having faith that you will get it is an amazinging attribute. One I try to foster daily…
Add me to the list of inspired individuals. I long to meet and fill my life with people just like you! Having that same faith is what made me decide at nearly 40 years old, I deserved a better life…filled with love and happiness…So far so good.
Congrats Jacob! One more down…and counting
Hahaha, Dawn, you rock!! Really great to see and interact with you here.
I love your mindset and appreciate the courage it takes to act on it despite the noise of opposition.
Looking fwd to continuing to connect as we create something magical (our lives!)
Chat soon!! -=)
Awesome Jacob., I've got absolutely no doubt that you will achieve this. You're intensity and passion are so energising that i bet you'll get there in less that 5 years.
I'm dedicating my life to helping people find their purpose and live a life of bliss, love and fulfillment.
Love it dude! Thanx so much for the kind words and insightful observations. You're up to some soul screaming stuff too these days. Looking fwd to making it toward your part of the world one day soon!!
This is an excellent way to show how an "impossible" task can be broken down. Once you focus on those tiny steps, it gets easier. You're going to reach a breaking point, too, where it's going to start to feel effortless. Best of luck to you, man. We'll be here to help, support, and enjoy the ride!
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah!! -=)
Thanx so much Tom – i always enjoying reading your reactions. And yeah dude, there was something really astonishing about being able to break the unpractical down to the practical. More of that magic coming in the months head.
Chat soon yo!!
Hey Jacob,
Wow…breaking it down….thanks for sharing your thought process, It is fascinating how you made the switch, FLIPPED it around and looked at it from another view. 8,000,000… is TOTALLY doable!!!
And it is just a number anyway. In the end, it is about the quality of insight that someone gains from the inspiration that you are putting out there. You can never know how you will impact someone's heart, their soul, their life…. so just keep going…. FULL FORCE, OPEN HEART, FEARLESSLY FORWARD!
OH yea, what would I do if I knew I could not fail? Be FEARLESS!!! that is for me the ultimate life's goal. Do I think I can do it? ABSOLUTELY!! What would it mean for me? That I could help others live fearlessly too.
THE SECRET? I'll let you know when I figure it out…I'm close.
Hahaha -=)… Thanx Kathy!! you ROCK avalanche style. I think 8M is totally doable as well but you're right about the quality of the inspiration. 8M is really just an arbitrary number to aim towards. I'm sure i'll continue to refine the task as it's in motion.
As for being fearless, haha! I don't think i'll ever fully rid myself of fear, but what i notice is that i'm developing the courage to move fwd in the face of it! -=)
I almost stopped reading because of the foul language at the beginning – I thought it was a random post from someone. You have good things to say – but you might want to ask yourself – is the foul language adding to your message or detracting from it.
Cool Jule. Thanx for the honest feedback. A big thrill surrounding me writing here is that i use "my voice" and talk the way i speak in person. I have a certain group of friends that tend to rough around a lot and use "foul" language but with the best of intentions. For the most part. i don't curse all that much tho – in person, or on Sensophy.
I could see how it could act as a barrier to letting the message come through to some. I'm conscious of that and am cautions about toning down myself for approval – i'll keep it in mind at the months roll on. Thanx for the food for thought! -=)
Jacob, I NEVER want to see you "tone down authenticity" in an attempt to "please everyone", because that won't happen no matter how hard you try anyway.
Your realness is what catapulted you to the top heap of my must-read list (and that's a short freakin' list).
You'll gain/lose readers for the entire life of Sensophy. So, what to do? The answer is be (un)real and true to thy self, even if that means droppin' a few passionate (*gasp*) F-Bombs occasionally! 🙂
Ha ha ha ha ha! Now that makes some sens-of-me. Feeling the warmth bro. Really appreciate the insights and i'm loving learning from your jewels as time continues to travel fwd. You {{get ready to gasp}} *fucking* rock!
Adding. 100% undoubtedly adding.
LMAO!
Well come on Jacob….you have got nice blue eyes!!!! (Oh and the rest of the blog post is great too!!)
Seriously, nice one…….and you'll smash your number – easy peasy!!
Big hugs 🙂
Good looking homeslice! {{Virtual eye contact… hold it, hold it, hold it -=)}}
Always appreciate your support, encouragement, and who you are as a person. Thanx Jayne!! -=)
Stole "I’ve found that the “why” is the most important piece of the puzzle. The “what” and “how” will fit in after the “why” is in place" for my FB today. I keep on bumping into this notion and it is starting to take a hold, slowly as I'm stubborn, but it is taking hold! So, thanks for the inspiration once again. You rock and what now 8 million – smilion! You go boy!
Hahaha that is greatness!! -=) thanx for the kind words and i can't claim that the "why" sentence wasn't influenced by a bunch of other great peeps. I'm pretty sure it open intellectual property at this point! -=) Enjoy!!
i'm reminded of the text on the side mirrors of cars: objects are closer than they appear – you will get there, my friend. whether you track it or not, it'll happen, and you'll know it. all good things!
Beautifully put bruddah. With a friend like you living so fully, i don't see any other option! -=)
Jacob, I love reading your stuff. You and I are so on the same sheet of music…in response to your questions –
* What’s one great thing you would dare to dream if you knew you could not fail?
* If you decided to dedicate the rest of your life to doing it, do you think you’d be able to?
why would I ever possibly NOT?????????? I mean, decide it, dream it, do it – all of the above. What am I here for, anyway? What are we all here for? So rock ON dude and thank you for shouting it from the roof tops…you are a major inspiration in my world!!
Yayyy..I'm hooked up 🙂 So….to continue; Jacob, what you refer to so often is what "suits" call mentoring. I recently found out that it is ESSENTIAL to getting ANYWHERE in this world…Why? Because we're human. That means the smart people find others who can help guide them in their endeavors so they don't have to suffer through trial and error on their own.
YES…the “why” is the most important thing…IF you are interested in being HAPPY. Sometimes, people need to be unhappy first to realize and appreciate what it is to be happy. I've been through the first part, so I'm personally primed for happiness :))))))) "Y" is important because it is the beginning of understanding yourself…and then others.
FYI; make that 8,000,000 plus ONE if you include Eugene 😀 hallahhhhhh!
Yayayayayuh Suzanne! Happy to have you plugged in here. -=) Mentoring is one of my go-to philosophies for constructing an extraordinary life. I wouldn't be anywhere near where i am today if it wasn't for the influence of people who extending their knowledge and support to me.
Hahaha – glad to hear that you're primed for happiness and i dig what you're saying about experiencing the other end of the spectrum. Mos def can relate!
Jacob,
Awesome post……your visuals were on point & made me think this week! Was that planned? Here is what I thought: Talk about someone who inspired millions- Dr. MLK. I'm sure his dream back then was unrealistic.
Finally, thanks for actually breaking down the imaginable and making it REAL- you will knock it out of the park. Count me in for the ride.
Haha!! What an awesome comment Lisa – thanx so much! MLK is massively inspiring to me too. Looking fwd to continuing to have fun as we ride into the future.
Thanks for the real deal spiel!! LOL.
With this mindset, strategy, momentum – you will see that 8 milly before 5.
8 million in NY…going all city!
All city baby, sounds familiarly. "Sensophy.com: The Official Home of New York City Inspiration"… haha – buggen!
Jacob you are like a beautiful drop of rain water at the center of my ocean – you landed, impacted & sent ripples out. From there I voiced your name & message by way of being a rain drop in the ocean of others, & outwards again the ripples traveled. And so your name, your word, & your inspiration goes & grows. I will cheer you on & celebrate your achievement as you pass the 8 mill mark. x
That "drop" may evolve into a hurricane! Thanx for the awesome words.
waterproofs & wellies at the ready. Not a problem, after all water is good for you! x
You can totally do it!!!
What number are you on now?
That article about the unrealisticness, I tweeted, facebooked, and linkedin it — I'm sure it inspired a couple more people. =) just keep writing good content and the people will come!
Haha – Thanx so much homegirl – happy to have you along for the ride! We've had about 10,000 "unique visitors" now (although i'm suspecting a bunch of those are duplicates). Good looking on the share care! -=)
Thanx so much Lori!! Love that you answered the question and even more so, that you're living it right now! GREATNESS. Looking fwd to continuing to cross paths on our happiness journeys.
Jacob,
That's quite a statement you're making here, bro! You have some very lofty goals, but whose to say you can't achieve them? Nobody can stop you, but you!
I like your attitude and the positive vibe you've got. Keep up the good work. See you around…
My life is quite a statement 😉 Thanx for the kind words dude. Have i told you in the last 5 hours how much i dig ur blog design?
I think it's been 6…..
While I think blog design is very important, I'd much rather be known for my content….
Gotcha'… I'd rather be known for smelling terrific.
That's some pretty awesome breakdown!
It really strikes me so amazing that something which looks absolutely impossible start appearing to be more and more possible when broken down into the smallest steps!
Btw, totally appreciate your honest response to criticism(specially coz I kinda suck at it…a part of myself that gotta be worked upon,I guess)…as for courage to dare, that's something I m still working on,so it's really REALLY INSPIRING TO SEE ALL U GUYS SO AWESOMELY COURAGEOUS!
Thanx Gunja! I think it's super cool how the break-down appeared also! And i bet you're a bit better at taking feedback than you might imagine -=)
As Godin put it, "unreasonable is the new reasonable". You seem to be right on track Jacob 🙂
Loved that line and lean toward it while living my life! Right back atcha' yo!
Dopetastic ! An awesome article. To up your stats quickly there are some things that would help tremendously. First; you should do some advanced SEO work on your site. Either you could do it or you could pay someone to do it for you. -Or some places even will let you pay them so they can walk you through how to do it yourself. Secondly; you should write an e-book or compile some of your favorite post into an ebook that people will receive once they sign up for your newsletter. Thirdly, you should guest post like nobody's bossiness. I would suggest http://www.lifehack.org/ . And in your bio have "Join my Newsletter for a free Ebook."
Mind you I'm sure you know all this but from what i've read those are the three most important. – I think if you set your mind to it you could exceed your goal. – Anything is possible.
Loved the line:
"About a month ago, i was playing with what my next “unrealistic goal” would be. How bad ass of this brother. Like tough leather jacket and timbo boots bad ass." —Talk about some fresh writing.
Hahaha!! Thanx so much Jace. All great ideas and i'll keep them in mind when i'm prioritizing my energy. Really appreciate the insights!!

Wow. I am 100% totally on board and completely inspired and can't wait to watch and learn and listen and play and learn some more. I have shared on Twitter about your quest and now will do the same on FB, my blog and anywhere else I can. Haha! Tough track man. Don't let me find out that's your shower singing anthem!!
2000 subscribers seems totally doable. What would you do with them once ya had em?
Hahaha, man I can't sing worth a damn and even throw tomatoes at myself in the shower. As for what I would do with 2000 subscribers, well I hope I can positively change their lives in some small way and possibly begin to monetize my efforts and move to a life that I passionately enjoy.
LMAO. Hilarious! Good stuff dude -=)
