“I’m more comfortable being vulnerable when i realize it’s not just about me, it’s about something bigger than me, and i feel called to share that.” -Brian Johnson
The conversation referenced occurred on one of Brian’s awesome Optimal Living 101 calls.
I’m going to share with you the opportunity to listen to a behind the scenes discussion from an Optimal Living 101 embodiment call. The conversation shared here is between Brian Johnson, CEO of Philosopher’s Notes, and I. To set the context of this convo’, we were wrapping up a 10 week course on creating an optimal life and busted into some detailed discussion of what we are most passionate about in life.
Keep it on the low but i high-jacked some Wi-Fi from an unsecured network to get my Skype on, Sokol style. I was sitting on a stoop at 3AM in Andros Greece, mightily muffling major wind sounds as well as wild herds of partying passer-byers. Brian was in his home in Ojai California at 5PM, probably doing “happy dances” and reading some Socrates in between split second spaced sentences.

Part 1: The Getting Paid To “Go To School” Lifestyle. [5:08]
Favorite Line: “I don’t wanna’ have to chase making money, so i’m gonna’ reduce our expenses. We’re just gonna’ be super patient, live an extraordinary lifestyle, experience a different culture, and be full time students.”
Note: Sonja Lyubomirsky is the author of The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want.
Part 2: Business Models and Giving Fearlessly. [1:45]
Favorite Line: “Whatever business model you pick, the variable that’s going to be most important is (1) your belief in what you’re doing (2) your commitment to service, and (3) your passion and commitment to creating extraordinary stuff.”
Note: 10,000 hours is the approximate amount of time it takes for mastery of a subject. I talk a bit more about it here: Epiphany Number 3
Part 3: Who Are You and How Can You Create Value? [2:35]
Favorite Line: “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
Note: The 3 concentric circles concept that Brian is referring to is also known as The Hedge Hog Concept.
Part 4: Putting Yourself Out There. [9:32]
Favorite Line: “It’s a hero’s journey, you go into the forest of the unknown, you enter at the darkest point … You leave your existing community, your family, your culture that has a certain way of doing things … You’re like you know what, that way just doesn’t resonate with me … When you go into the forest, if there’s already a path there, it’s somebody else’s. You gotta’ find your own. And by definition that’s scary, and people are worried for you.”
Note: Gary Vaynerchuk is the author of Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion.
Part 5: Ghettotasticness! [3:12]
Favorite Line: “There’s no way you’re gonna’ get me to go apply for a job again.”
Note: I love my job (Full time student of life, and sharer of findings!)

Jacob: Just want to encourage you to keep putting your authentic self out there. I'm excited to see you so on purpose…I can really feel your vibes radiating through your soul. Keep doing your Videos they are better than you think. You are going to inspire the whole En*theos community with your passion.
=D <~~~~~~ Cheese smile Gieta. Thanks so much for that enthusiastic encouragement and phenomenal faith. Appreciate ALL of what you said and laughed out load about the video comment. Looking fwd to creatively connecting in the future. Talk super soon!!
Just listened again to the snippets and am really resonating with Part 4. Sometime's it feels like I just don' 'fit' within the community I live in especially with some parts of my family and with many of my friends. Recently I've discovered that I'm highly sensitised to any negative vibes around me and find it exceptionally hard to be around negative people…to the point where I willingly cut myself off from everyone just to be away from all the negativity! I know I can be negative at times and am focusing a lot on learning more about shadow work and understanding how projection works. I'm a work-in-progress 🙂
So I guess I have ventured into the forest alone at the darkest point and am finding my own path. I have to trust my intuition and continue on the path not knowing where it will go or whether I'll end up being alone. That's a BIG leap to take…….but I'm taking it anyway!
Thanks Jacob as always for sharing your wisdom xx
WOWOW!! Sounds like we're in the same boat. I hope you let your heart light up the night and you find beauty in the unknown and ALL it has to offer. I trust great things will come of that.
As for the shadow stuff, i'm still working on that big time. I was just thinking to myself today, the next time i think of someone in an accusing manner, restate what im saying in my head with the 3 fingers pointing back at me. Example: This guys driving like a real moron – changes to – In the past, i've drove like a real moron.
Talk soon my fellow work-in-progress…
This is just a sample comment that I've written
