Have you ever been in a situation where you knew you needed to make a change but you didn’t do it? Or do you have a friend or loved one that you really wanna inspire to make some positive changes in their lives, but all they ever do is nod along and then don’t do anything about it?
“People don’t change until the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing.” -Unknown
Today I’m gonna share a Sensophy classic with you where I philosophize on what makes people change. I also share a simple exercise I use with my coaching clients to help inspire them to finally commit to making the changes necessary to live a fulfilling life.
I recorded this video back in 2011. I had quit my job a year earlier and had taken huge risks to create the extraordinary life I had previously only been dreaming of. At the time, I didn’t have a steady stream of income and a lot of my fam + friends were telling me I was an idiot for taking these risks.
When I used to come across awesome peeps online, I often imagined that getting to the point of freedom, community and massive growth had probably been straight-forward and natural for them. That’s why I wanted to share one of my early videos, accompanied by some classic hip-hop background music and a guest appearance by my boy, Krylon.
At that point in my life, I wasn’t coaching, but I still knew the power of making a serious investment in yourself. We’re all human, and creating extraordinary lives isn’t just for a selective few. You can do it if you’re willing to be patient, persistent and diligent, and make a massive commitment to investing in yourself.
And that’s exactly what this video is about:
- 1:10 – Why I didn’t have the courage to change my life.
- 2:00 – This is why people change.
- 3:30 – How to bring yourself to the place of change.
- 5:45 – What happens when we don’t change.
- 6:00 – The best possible investment you can ever make.

I want to meet you! Just like you said, pain unfortunately is the key to making a change. January 31st I had a life changing experience and I won't get into details but now for the first time I am doing things that I enjoy. Can I have your e-mail address? You're awesome!
:o)

Thanx for the warm words!
Sounds ridiculously cool. What part of France?!
enjoy! :o)
I think that saying is from Tony Robbins??? Or did he maybe take it and quote it from someone else? It's a good point though. Why change when there is no pain around staying where we are. We need to be "burnt" sometimes in order to take action to get off the hotplate. Good video.
Love the quote.
And I've heard it from so many different people, so many different times, I've gotta default to unknown.
I actually quit my dayjob at that exact same moment. It started out being sort of fun (for what it was), then slowly became worse and worse unitl I was sooo miserable and couldn't not quit. Same with junk food and exercise. Lol. Eating badly until my pants don't fit anymore and then starting to eat right again and exercising.
Great tips on getting there before that moment! Thanks 🙂
Hehe… [sips green-smoothie] I know whatcha mean. :o)
“When people are ready to, they change. They never do it before then, and sometimes they die before they get around to it. You can’t make them change if they don’t want to, just like when they do want to, you can’t stop them" Andy Warhol
Yo Jacob!
Feels good to be back here man 🙂
I know what you mean about silent suffering. All in a period of a couple weeks I ended a three year relationship, took an indefinite break from school, and moved out of the city I'd been living in for the past 4 years.
The jumping off point came when the pain was so massive I couldn't imagine doing it another day. Now, I'm attempting to align my life more and more with where my heart and passion lies. It's been one hell of a journey.
Sometimes when the call of the heart is so strong we just have to take the plunge, even though we're not positive where it's going to lead.
I'd love to connect with you and the tribe again soon, if you'll have me back 🙂
It sounds really interesting. I felt really compelled when you mentioned about imagining if your next year can be your best year. This is so difficult to achieve without planning but it is good to see that you take care of it.
This is my first time on your blog… and it’s really great.
